The 50-year "whiskey war" between Canada and Denmark over territory has ended

The war of "whiskey and schnapps" ended with a peace treaty. The sovereignty of the island of Tartupaluk (Hans) has been discussed for more than 50 years, finally the countries found a consensus. Canada now has a land border with Europe.

In the middle of the Nares Strait, which separates Greenland and the Canadian province of Nunavut, Hans Island rises. The area of the island is only 1.3 square kilometers, it is uninhabited, there are no trees and there is practically no soil. It would seem, well, let it rise to himself, who, actually, needs it. But no, this island has been the site of an international conflict for almost half a century.

Canada and Denmark demarcated their borders in 1973, but could not then agree on the ownership of the tiny island of Hans - it is at an equal distance from both states.

In 1984, Canadians arrived on Hans Island. They planted their flag and left a bottle of local whiskey. A couple of weeks later, the Danes landed on the island, replaced the foreign flag with their own, drank whiskey and put schnapps instead. Thus began the most intelligent war in history.

Since then, the ritual has been repeated every few months until the current agreement. According to it, the border will pass through a crevice in the middle of the island.

The Danish Foreign Minister believes that the consensus reached by Denmark and Canada will become an example for other countries.
